EYFS & KS1 Strong Foundations

At St Paul’s CofE Primary School & Nursery, we believe that children need strong foundations in order to flourish both academically and personally. Our EYFS and KS1 curriculum focuses on developing the foundational knowledge and skills children need for future learning and life.

These foundations include:

  • communication and language
  • early reading and phonics
  • vocabulary development
  • number sense and early mathematics
  • independence and self-regulation
  • social and emotional development
  • curiosity and understanding of the world

We know that children learn best when they feel safe, valued and confident. Through nurturing relationships, high-quality teaching, purposeful play and rich learning experiences, we help children develop the knowledge, skills and behaviours needed to become successful learners.

Communication sits at the heart of our approach. We prioritise speaking, listening, storytelling and vocabulary development across all areas of learning so that children can communicate confidently and access the wider curriculum successfully.

Our curriculum is carefully sequenced from our two-year-old provision through to the end of Key Stage 1, ensuring children steadily build the strong foundations needed for the next stage of their education.

The following documents, Foundational Knowledge & Skills and Strong Foundations, provide an overview of the key knowledge, skills and approaches that underpin learning across EYFS and Key Stage 1 at St Paul’s.

They highlight the essential foundations children need to develop, including communication and language, reading, mathematics, independence and self-regulation, alongside the high-quality teaching, purposeful play, nurturing relationships and language-rich environments that support children to flourish.

Together, they demonstrate how we help children build the strong foundations needed to become confident, resilient and successful learners.
